Why did the customer contact us?
🚽 United Fire and Water responded to a Category 3, Class 3 water loss at a residential home in Baton Rouge, LA, after a leak at a toilet flange sent contaminated water onto the subfloor. The water damaged the bathroom tile and wood subfloor, then drained down into the ceiling drywall of the main hallway downstairs. It also saturated the carpet, padding, and tack strips in the bathroom closet and in both vanity areas. A toilet flange leak can go unnoticed while water travels through the floor system to other parts of the home.
Solutions provided:
Because this was a Category 3 loss, our team set up an air scrubber in the spare bathroom before demolition to help control airborne contaminants. We removed the saturated carpet, padding, and tack strips from both vanity areas and the bathroom closet, about 54 square feet each of carpet and padding and 68 linear feet of tack strips. We also removed roughly 9'8" of baseboards and quarter round and took up 32 square feet of tile flooring, along with the 3/4" leveling cement and wire mesh underneath it. Around the toilet flange, we cut out 2 square feet of plywood subfloor, which was two layers of 3/4" plywood making up a 1 1/2" subfloor. Once the contaminated materials were removed, our team HEPA vacuumed 86 square feet of flooring and wiped it down with an antimicrobial disinfectant. We then set up a dehumidifier to dry the space before repairs. Materials exposed to contaminated water usually can’t be cleaned and dried in place, so careful removal and sanitizing protect both the home and the people living in it. If your Baton Rouge home has a toilet leak or other contaminated water loss, United Fire and Water is ready to help.
